The month of August is shaping up to be a quieter period in the annual boxing calendar. However, there are plenty of interesting fights to get into, with two title match ups happening.
First up, on Saturday 6 August at Madison Square Garden in New York City, Amanda Serrano (42-2-1, 30 KOs) will defend her WBC and WBO Featherweight Titles against Brenda Carabajal (18-5-1, 9 KOs).
Puerto Rican Serrano is not only the unified featherweight world champion as a professional boxer, but she is also a mixed martial artist and wrestler.
She won the WBO title in 2019 and the WBC title in 2021, and holds the Guinness World Record for the most boxing world championships won in different weight-classes by a female, having held 9 major world titles across seven different weight classes.
Serrano comes into the fight against mandatory challenger and Argentinian Carabajal following a much debated defeat against Irish Katie Taylor who became the undisputed lightweight champion after that a split decision in that bout in April 2022.
Carabajal will be a massive underdog in this contest. Her last fight was against Debora Dioninius in May 2022, which she narrowly won by majority decision to win the interim belt.
Later in the month comes the blockbuster rematch of Oleksandr Usyk (19-0-0, 13 KOs) versus Anthony Joshua (24-0-2, 22 KOs), dubbed Rage on the Red Sea.
The Ukrainian and the Brit will meet on Saturday 20 August at The Jewel in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia to content the WBA, IBF and WBO Heavyweight Titles.
AJ will be looking to reclaim his world titles after being outclassed by Usyk in September last year at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in London, United Kingdom.
Usyk vs Joshua II was originally planned for earlier this year in May, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine meant the bout was postponed.
Usyk had returned to his homeland and joined the military in the defence of Ukraine, but was later given government permission to return to his training camp in preparation for the rematch with AJ.
A possible unification fight against Tyson Fury awaits the victor.
