Bravose Previews: Fights happening in June 2023

Looking ahead to the boxing matches taking place in the month of June, and we are super excited for the return of the undisputed women's middleweight champion, Claressa Shields.

Shields (13-0, 2 KOs) is set to fight back on home turf in what promises to be a memorable night in Detroit at Little Caesars Arena on Saturday 3 June.

After Hanna Gabriels was forced to pull out due to a failed drugs test, 28-year-old Shields will be taking on late replacement opponent Maricela Cornejo (14-5, 5 KOs).

It is set to be a huge step up for Cornejo, despite the 36-year-old American fighter coming into the bout of the back of a three fight winning streak and having secured a first round victory by knockout over Sheila Cunha in March this year.

Meanwhile Shields has dominated the world of women’s boxing for years, and she is the clear favourite going into this fight.

If she does take the win over Cornejo, a number of huge fights beckon, not least of which would be a potential rematch with Savannah Marshall.

Shields battled Marshall in the ring in an entertaining October 2022 match up. Some say it was Shields’ toughest test as a professional boxer, yet she still took a clear unanimous decision to become undisputed champion at middleweight.

Although Cornejo will need to perform at the best ever standard of her life to be competitive against Shields, she nevertheless has the opportunity to make a name for herself.

Shields hasn’t won by knock out since August 2017, whereas Cornejo has never been stopped in her five losses, meaning there is a chance this fight will go the distance even if Shields ultimately prevails.
