Bravose Previews: Fights happening in April 2022
von {{ author }} Kate Rosindale an Apr 01, 2022
The month of April will see various title fights taking place, with two match ups in particular catching our eye.
On Saturday 23 April, Tyson Fury (31-0-1) will defend his WBC Heavyweight Title against Dillian Whyte (28-2) in a huge all-British blockbuster before a crowd of around 90,000 boxing fans at Wembley Stadium.
For Fury the fight comes after he devastated Deontay Wilder (42-2-1) in Las Vegas last October to retain his WBC crown.
The Gypsy King had been all set to face Ukrainian Oleksandr Usyk (19-0) in a unification bout but, after Whyte and fellow Brit Anthony Joshua (24-2) declined money to step aside, that fight is on ice.
Thanks to Usyk and Joshua being due to meet in June this year, WBC interim champion Whyte will get his long-awaited shot at a title, an opportunity he has been going after for over four years now.
The hotly anticipated bout will be Whyte’s first fight since he defeated Russian Alexander Povetkin (36-3-1) in their rematch in March 2021.
Meanwhile Ireland’s Katie Taylor (20-0) will take on Puerto Rican Amanda Serrano (42-1-1) at Madison Square Garden in New York City in a bid to retain the WBA, WBC, IBF and WBO Lightweight Titles on Saturday 30 April.
The occasion is being described as the biggest fight ever in women’s boxing. For one thing, the bout itself will see the pound-for-pound number one and number two female boxers come together.
As if that wasn't enough, Taylor and Serrano will make sporting history by becoming the first ever pair of female fighters to headline a combat sports event inside the iconic venue.
Speaking about the historical significance of the fight, Serrano’s representative Jake Paul said: “Amanda and Katie are the two best female boxers in the world right now. They deserve this stage, this historic payday and they deserve to settle who is the pound for pound best.
“Most of all it’s about the future young women and girls all around the world who will see April 30 as a moment that made the impossible, possible, equality as it’s meant to be.”
