Bravose Previews: Fights happening in June 2021

There are six title fights taking place during June 2021.

It is a huge change from this time last year, when the world of boxing – much like the rest of the planet – was shut down due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

First up Daniel Dubois (15-1, 14 KO) takes on Bogdan Dinu (20-2, 16 KO) for the WBA ‘Interim’ Heavyweight Title. Promoted by Frank Warren’s Queensbury, the fight is set to take place in Telford on Saturday 5 June.

Dubois will be hoping to bounce back to winning ways after his shattering defeat at the hands of fellow Brit Joe Joyce in November 2020. Dinu comes into the bout off the back of two wins in a row.

On Saturday 12 June, Shakur Stevenson (15-0, 8 KO) meets Jeremiah Nakathila (21-1, 17 KO) in the WBO ‘Interim’ Super-Featherweight Title fight. With Bob Arum’s Top Rank as promoters, the fighters are scheduled to meet each other at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas.

There is much at stake for Stevenson and Nakathila, with the winner of the title looking expectantly towards a meeting with either WBC champion Oscar Valdez or full WBO king Jamel.

The following week, on Saturday 19 June, Triller Fight Club will bring Teofimo Lopez (16-0, 12 KO) and George Kambosos Jr (19-0, 10 KOs) to the ring in Miami for the WBA, WBC ‘Franchise’, IBF & WBO Lightweight Titles.

The fight was originally slated for Saturday 5 June, but was moved to avoid a clash with the Floyd Mayweather Jr and YouTube star Logan Paul exhibition match. Lopez is defending his titles against Kambosos, who is coming off two consecutive split decision victories.

On the same night, Naoya Inoue (20-0, 17 KOs) takes on the little-known mandatory challenger Michael Dasmarinas (30-2-1, 20 KOs) for the WBA & IBF Bantamweight Titles at Virgin Hotels in Las Vegas.

Inoue has already won world titles in three weight classes and holds a championship fight record of 15-0 with 13 KOs. Dasmarinas is 12-0-1 since the last defeat of his career, back in 2014.

Also on that date, at the Toyota Centre in Houston, Jermall Charlo (31-0, 22 KOs)  and Juan Macias Montiel (22-4-2, 22 KOs) will battle it out for the WBC Middleweight Title.

Charlo will enter the ring in his hometown and seek to maintain his unbeaten record in front of his crowd, but Montiel himself has put together an undefeated run since moving up division to Middleweight.

Rounding out the month, on Saturday 26 June, Gervonta Davis (24-0, 23 KOs) and Mario Barrios 26-0, 17 KOs) are set to fight it out for the WBA ‘Regular’ Super-Lightweight Title.

A protégé of Floyd Mayweather Jr, Davis will hope that victory over Barrios will set him on the path to be as famous as his mentor. Barrios will have the height advantage, standing at four inches taller than his rival.
