Bravose Previews: Fights happening in February 2023

As the 2023 boxing scene continues to warm up, more fights are coming our way in February.

The Bravose pick of the bouts for this month is Amanda Serrano (43-2-1, 30 KOs) versus Erika Cruz (15-1, 3 KOs).

Puerto Rican Serrano and Mexican Cruz will battle it out for undisputed featherweight glory on Saturday 4 February in New York City at The Theater at Madison Square Garden.

If IBF, WBC and WBO title holder Serrano is able to wrestle the WBA belt out of Cruz’s hands then she will become the first boxer from Puerto Rico to become an undisputed champion.

No wonder Serrano has insisted she is focused on this fight, despite claims in some quarters that the bout is simply a warm up ahead of the highly anticipated rematch with Ireland’s Katie Taylor.

In a 14-year and 46-fight career that is littered with highlights and achievements, a victory against Cruz to hold all belts at 126lbs could turn out to be Serrano’s biggest success yet.

Speaking at a press conference, Serrano said: “I want to be the first Puerto Rican undisputed world champion. That’s my goal.

"Puerto Rico has had champions in all the divisions - the seven-division world champion, the youngest champion - and now, God willing, I will become the first undisputed champion coming out of Puerto Rico. And it’s at the weight division where I feel my best. I’m comfortable, it’s my division.”

Serrano is expecting a hard fought battle with Cruz that will satisfy fans around the world no matter the result.

Serrano continued: “It’s definitely going to be a great fight.

"Erika Cruz is a Mexican champion. She’s going to come - and I’m coming - guns blazing, so it’s going to be punches and bunches and it’s going to be an amazing night.

"The fans are going to be the winners because it’s going to be a great night of fireworks and punches and action.”
